Press release issued by SOS Chrétiens d’Orient: COP29 in Azerbaijan: Provocation, shame and abandonment.

The COP29 international conference on climate change will take place in the Azerbaijani capital Baku from 11 November 2024. According to SOS Chrétiens d’Orient, “organising this event in the capital of Azerbaijan is both a provocation and a shame.”

It is a provocation from Azerbaijan which, with impunity, has caused a regional imbalance. It is a shame for the international community that continues to ignore Azerbaijan’s plundering and violation of Armenia’s territorial integrity.

The convening of the COP29 in Baku is a new abandonment to the Armenians of Artsakh, following the inaction of the international community in 2023, which led to the invasion and disappearance of the Republic of Artsakh, the arrest of its leaders who remain illegally imprisoned in Azerbaijani prisons, ethnic cleansing, the flight of 120,000 people in tragic conditions to Armenia, and the systematic destruction of all traces of the Armenian heritage in Artsakh.

SOS Chrétiens d’Orient, working side by side with the Armenian people on the ground since 2020, affirms its unwavering support for Armenia. “We will continue to support these brave people,” said Benjamin Blanchard, Director General of SOS Chrétiens d’Orient.
