Syria emergency: SOS Chrétiens d’Orient stands the displaced people from Aleppo.
Since the invasion of Aleppo by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) jihadists, former Syrian branch of Al-Qaeda, between 300,000 and 400,000 Aleppo residents have fled to Homs, Latakia and Damascus. Those who were unable to leave in time can no longer leave the city. Aleppo is closed off by the jihadists, subject to a strict curfew, and fighting is raging on the road leading to the south of Syria.
‘The Aleppo inhabitants who were able to flee left in a matter of moments without taking the slightest piece of luggage with them. When they arrived in Damascus after hours of hard and stressful travel, they have nothing left,’ explains Waël Kassouha, head of mission for SOS Chrétiens d’Orient in Syria.
‘Now is the emergency aid time. Working with our partners, we are distributing basic necessities such as clothes, blankets, hygiene kits and food parcels. SOS Chrétiens d’Orient teams in Syria are therefore mobilised to offer displaced people a little comfort. In addition, SOS Chrétiens d’Orient is indirectly continuing its work in Aleppo to help those who were unable to leave in time.
Benjamin Blanchard, general director of SOS Chrétiens d’Orient, and all the members of our team in Syria are available to answer journalists’ questions.
