SOS Chrétiens d'Orient

Who we are ?

SOS Chrétiens d’Orient is an apolitical NGO since 2013, working in the heart of the secured areas of the Middle-East. It’s young and dynamic members, work on a 24 /7 basis the field supporting the Christians of the East, whether Orthodox or Catholic, providing concrete and humanitarian material aid.

Working under a strict code of behavior and security, the heads of mission work in the middle of the most dangerous areas in the world, in close proximity with populations in need, populations who are persecuted for their faith, sharing meetings, shared stories, smiles, too often tears, but always, with a heart filled with compassion and joy.

To the moral and material distress of persecuted populations, the association responds with action. Volunteers work on the projects of the association on a permanent basis throughout the year in the different countries of mission. "By their side, my heart is shaping to welcome their suffering without ever forgetting that I still have so much to learn from their strength and exemplary hope." Luana, volunteer in Iraq.

The goal is clear: rebuild the stones but also the men. Added to the emergency aid provided are economic development projects so that the populations of the Middle East can become economically autonomous and create their own wealth. The talents and skills of all volunteers are utilized so that teams can work seriously and effectively to achieve maximum efficiency.

The association testifies to the superior vocation of France: renewing the link with the Christians of the Orient, a duty that is not simply humanitarian, but which is also importantly culturally.

Our history

2013

2013

In September 2013, Charles de Meyer and Benjamin Blanchard hear the news that the village of Maaloula in Syria has been taken by the jihadists. They decide to go to Syria in person, and bring with them four tons of medicines, clothes and toys to the various communities of Damascus. They don't know the country, they don't speak the language...

2014

At the beginning of the year, the association is experiencing exponential growth and quickly becomes a privileged commentator with the major media outlets, on the question of the Christians of the Orient. All eyes are fixed on the Middle East.

SOS Chrétiens d’Orient launches seven large-scale operations and conducts more than two-hundred emergency actions in Iraq and Lebanon. After an in-depth analysis of the needs, it runs several major reconstruction projects for churches and schools and provides the entire finance needed to build medical cabins.

2015

2015

In 2015, the association opens its permanent missions in Syria and Jordan and continues its actions in Lebanon and Iraq. In total, eleven missions and more than 800 actions are carried out during the year for people at risk, displaced or refugees. A million euros is distributed to refugees so that eat, receive medical care, stay and rebuild their lives.

2016

The association organizes hundreds of humanitarian distributions: food, toys, medicines, to refugee camps in Iraqi Kurdistan and to isolated families from Lebanon and Jordan. The reconstruction sites of schools, clinics, nurseries and churches continue. In Aleppo, still under the yoke of jihadists, the association tries to remedy the water shortage which puts at risk the survival of the weakest inhabitants. It provides generators, capable of drawing water and distributes medicines for the treatment of chronic diseases.

2017

2017

After years of war and violent clashes, 2017 promises to be the year of renewal for the populations in the Middle East. Hope is within reach. The time for reconstruction and relocating has come. The association intensifies its long-term development projects to rebuild a sustainable economic model that allows the Christians of the Orient to reclaim their lives: agricultural micro-projects, training of workers in buildings, rehabilitation of shops, solidarity loans...

2018

Today, the association is active in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt and Pakistan. More than 1.700 volunteers have worked in the field. They distributed more than sixty tons of medical or humanitarian equipment, more than thirty tons of medicines or food baskets. They regularly visit 20,000 persons who are living in the situation of extreme poverty.

This year, the association will again pick up their work shovels, and with your support, rebuild the future of the Christians of the Orient on their own lands, the land of their ancestors.

Our Main Missions

EMERGENCY HELP

For years, the Christians of the Orient have been victims of persecution threatening their actual existence. Many lives are crammed into refugee camps, prey to the advance of Islamists. SOS Chrétiens d’Orient helps the most vulnerable by providing emergency relief: water, food, housing, emergency equipment, hygiene packs, heating, blankets...

MEDICAL CARE

In Syria and Iraq, SOS Chrétiens d’Orient finances pharmacies and mobile infirmaries, medical cabins, as well as the purchase of health equipment and medicines. In Syria, it brings medical beds to the Saint-Louis hospital in Damascus. In Ankawa, Iraq, it builds and equips a complete clinic for the Four Towers camp. All of these actions have already helped to rescue tens of thousands of people in immediate serious danger.

ESTABLISHMENT

SOS Chrétiens d’Orient also conducts projects that value the Christian identity and heritage of the Middle East, in order to allow people to continue to live on their land. Our volunteers are working on the redevelopment of historical sites (South-Lebanon) and maintaining an active spiritual life (pilgrimages, prayers vigils....) to preserve the existence of the Christianity of the East. The association also devotes itself to securing or restoring churches destroyed by Islamists, such as those in Maaloula in Syria.

EDUCATION

SOS Chrétiens d’Orient regularly follows more than 5000 families: more than half of these families have members that are less than fifteen years old. Preserving the youngest of the violence of war and guaranteeing their future is as important as feeding or treating them. Volunteers spend a lot of time with the little ones to play with them and give them moral support. For Christmas, SOS Chrétiens d’Orient organizes toys and shows for children. Whenever the conditions allow, we build schools so that young refugees can continue to educate themselves.

INFORMATION

SOS Chrétiens d’Orient gladly responds to the questions of journalists and of institutions, economic or cultural who are interested in the situation of Christians in the Middle East. The teams in Middle East give lectures or are interviewed in the media to provide the general public with the most accurate information possible. When conditions permit, volunteers guide teams of journalists in the field, in order to allow them to understand the realities of the humanitarian drama that is happening in the Middle East.
