The District of Ezbet el-Nakhl, located in the north of Cairo, is one of the poorest in the Egyptian capital. A little more than a million people live there in narrow and precarious apartments. Mainly Christians coming from southern Egypt, with the hope of finding work and a better life.

In this neighborhood, this land of waste streets, live about thirty disabled people. Every day, some of them wait eagerly for the arrival of the next visitor, but most of them spend their time moping, sitting in a corner of the room. On a few days in the week, they can escape from the monotous grind of daily life by participating in weaving and DIY activities at the Salam Center. They take a minibus, a kind of outdated little soap box.

Sister Emmanuelle

True love, solid, sustainable, is the one who seeks the happiness of others at the same time as its own happiness.

Since the 1980s, the Salam Center, founded by the Congregation of Daughters of Mary, comes to help the elderly, the disabled, the sick and the children of the neighborhood district of Ezbet el-Nakhl. For the transport of patients between hospice and centre, the sisters use a seven-seater minibus which is in poor condition. In this 'soap box', which has no leather to cover the seats, no airbag to protect its travelers in case of an accident; but instead an outdated gearbox which could give up at any time , and safety belts worn by time.

For the past few years, the number of people to transport to the centre is growing much faster than the capacity of the minibus.

The Congregation of the Daughters of Marie therefore absolutely need a new minibus to continue their work. A fourteen seater minibus costs 13,750 euros. Sisters can only finance up to 5.000 euros.

Due to high inflation, the price of a minibus continues to increase in Egypt. Early January, it cost only 12,000 euros, which is 15 % less than the current price.

SOS Chrétiens d'Orient must collect the money to purchase the minibus as soon as possible, the remaining 8,750 euros. The association is fighting for them but without your help, the sisters will no longer be able to attend to the ever growing need for their care and they will have to reduce their care to the indigent.

Goal : 8750 €
