A GLIMMER OF HOPE FOR THE SLUM HOSPITAL

In the south of Cairo, the slum of 15 May in Helwan counts 5,000 inhabitants, mainly Coptic-Orthodox.

The conditions of life are extremely precarious. There is only one water pipe for the whole city, electricity is stolen from the nearby souk and brought to the slum by very rudimentary electrical facilities. The seven-hundred fifty families who live there, piled up in narrow houses. Around these homes, the children run and play, without shoes and play in the pile of waste and garbage that accumulates around them.

Jerome, head of mission in Egypt.

Early December 2018, when we arrived for the first time, the kids came to meet us, barefoot, often without pants or with torn sweaters, some were sick, others were already working with their parents as a rag pickers or sorting the waste... but their smiles were intact, wonderful and splendid!

In this slum, Father Athanasius, an Orthodox Coptic priest, serves as a civil and moral authority. In 2017, he built a large church on the central square, preserving a place which can serve as a haven of peace to the local inhabitants. Located in front of the church, a hospital is under construction. It is made up of a few consultation rooms for patients and has a very outdated pharmacy. Both the lack of equipment and staff unfortunately does not allow good working conditions and the doctor is only called on site in case of an emergency.

The development of a second floor would allow the permanent presence of a doctor on site, the establishment of a functional pharmacy, consultation rooms and an operating room, which would provide medical care for the inhabitants of the slum.

The ragpickers of the slum of May 15 need your help. Your donations would enable the installation of electricity on the second floor and help the association to take a big step forward in the construction of this hospital and in the development of the medical access for the families of the slum.

24,000 euros are necessary to install all of the electricity needed for this hospital.
